Methods to handle scheduling in Primavera P6: Retained Logic and Progress Override

Updated: Apr 24

Retained Logic

  • What it does: It respects the original sequence of activities. Even if an activity starts earlier than planned, retained logic will not allow the following activities to start until the preceding ones are completed as initially scheduled.

  • Effect on schedule: This can extend the project's finish date because it doesn't allow for overlapping activities that have started out of sequence.

Progress Override

  • What it does: It ignores the original sequence when calculating the schedule based on actual progress. If an activity starts or finishes out of the planned order, progress override recalculates the schedule as if the disrupted sequence was intended.

  • Effect on schedule: This can shorten the project's finish date because it allows for overlapping of activities that have started or finished out of their planned sequence.

Actual Dates

  • Role in scheduling: Actual start and finish dates are the real dates when activities began or were completed. Primavera P6 uses these dates, along with the scheduling method (retained logic or progress override), to update and manage the project schedule.
