Resource Loading in Primavera(P6)

In EPC projects, project resource management is including process of identifying, acquiring and managing the resources, to monitor the execution of the plan and actual resources against its schedule and preparing a catch-up plan in case required. It includes processes for planning all Resources in E, P and C including manpower assigned.

The execution of the project will be tracked using a Level 3 schedule, encompassing the utilization of manpower, equipment, and, occasionally, materials essential for carrying out the planned activities. These resources are divided into three categories: labor, non-labor, or materials.

  • Labor and non-labour resources, which may include individuals, teams, machinery, or equipment, are planned according to time allocations (for example, 8 hours per day in the office, or 10 to 24 hours per day on-site).

  • Material resources refer to items that are either used up or created in the course of the project, with quantities measured in physical units like meters, tonnes, or barrels.

In the Primavera system, resources are listed in the resource dictionary and structured hierarchically. This setup allows for the classification of resources across various levels, ensuring an organized grouping. It's advised to create resource nodes specific to each group of assets or operational units. Guidelines for the hierarchical organization of resources are provided below.

Resource Curves :

Resource curves specify how you want resource units (or cost) spread throughout an activity. Resource units are distributed evenly during an activity unless you specify nonlinear distribution using curves. We assign resource curve to each department activity as below:

  • Project management: Linear

  • Engineering (FEED, DD): Bell shaped (Normal)

  • Procurement (Tendering activity): Linear

  • Procurement (Fabrication/Deliver): Back loaded / Milestone payment

  • Construction: Shaped (Normal)

  • Drilling: Linear

  • Pre-commissioning & Commissioning: Linear

For each activity, the resource will be assigned as below:

Then in resource, a spreadsheet can be monitored as below:

Also manpower histogram as below:

The weight factor will be defined as a resource in P6, then the physical progress curve will be extracted from it.

We should set “use resource curve/future period buckets” in the earned value tab in WBS window as below.
